Ex RAF stocks, previously R4979. Built at Hatfield and assembled in NZ. Shipped to New Zealand on "SS Rangitata" and Taken On Charge at Unit 18 Rongotai on 7 June, 1940. Issued to 3 EFTS Harwood, Christchurch. Collided with NZ886 near the corners of Burnside and Wooldridge Roads, Harewood. Pilot of NZ886 (LAC William Stephens RNZAF) killed while NZ883 crashed into a nearby paddock, pilot seriously injured, on 20 February, 1941, and overturned after crash landing in a paddock. Aircraft badly damaged but was repaired at Harewood and returned to service with 3 EFTS.
Crashed near Kaiapoi when the left wing folded back to 45 degrees during a loop at 3,000 feet on 11 September, 1941, while being operated by No.3 EFTS. The aircraft entered a spin which could not be controlled. The instructor managed to bale out, but the pupil was unable to do so in time. The accident was caused by faulty workmanship on the tie-rod that held the wing attachments to the fuselage.

Tiger Moth NZ883 was written off books at Harewood by/on 30.9.41. The reported crash location of Kaiapoi is a town in the Waimakariri District of the Canterbury region, in the South Island of New Zealand. The town is located approximately 17 kilometres north of central Christchurch, close to the mouth of the Waimakariri River.
