Narrative:The aircraft was destroyed on 12-08-2007 when it crashed towards the end of a flight from Rio Dulce to Guatemala City. Last contact with the flight, which was said to be routine, was when it was in the vicinity of Sanarate, about 30 km North East of Guatemala City. The aircraft crashed near the village Mirador de la Cruz, which is about 15 km North East of Guatemala City. There was no distress call. The accident happened in daylight (15:00 hours Local) and in 'normal' weather. According to contemporary newspaper reports:
"We could not do anything, the plane collided with several trees and when we arrived the people were already dead," said Sunday the AP fire spokesman Mario Cruz. The accident occurred in a rural area located about 14 kilometers north of the city, killed five women and one man, all members of the family Kluffman, returning from a trip to Rio Dulce, Izabal, a town located about 300 kilometers northeast of the city of Guatemala.
The dead are July Kluffman and his wife Martha Lily de Leon and his daughters Jackie, Lili, Stephanie. In addition Kluffman wife's mother, Olivia Vargas de León was also killed. The plane, a Piper PA-34 Seneca with the Guatemalan registration TG-KDL, fell to the bottom of a deep ravine. So far the authorities have been unable to determine why the aircraft fell to the ground
The bodies were identified by Marvin Leon, brother of Martha Lily, who went by helicopter to the scene. With the help of people who were near the scene of the accident, and by using ropes and special equipment, rescue teams managed to open the remains of Piper PA-34 Seneca, Guatemalan registration TG-KDL. Using shears (jaw of life) was necessary to cut the metal of the cabin, and thus remove the bodies of the aircraft, which during the crash cut through several trees. The funeral of those recovered is scheduled for Tuesday 14 August" [2007].
