The pilot of the motorized glider encountered a downdraft from convecting activity during initial climb out from the runway. The glider was climbing at 150 - 200ft/minute and was about 100ft AGL when it started to descent at 200ft/minute. The pilot attempted to land in a open field, but struck a fence during the approach. The glider was powered by a two stroke 25HP engine and was operated with full water ballast at maximum cross weight. The density altitude was estimated to be 9,000ft when the accident occured. The pilot was a competitor in a national motorglider competition.
