Narrative:The pilot departed East London Aerodrome for Port Alfred Aerodrome, accompanied by three passengers. The flight was uneventful.
The pilot stated that upon landing on Runway 28L at Port Alfred, with a crosswind of 250° at 10 kts from the left, he landed aircraft – a tail-dragger – on the main landing gear, but as the tail wheel touched the grass runway surface, he lost directional control of the aircraft when the aircraft suddenly ground looped to the right, to face in the direction that he was coming from. During the ground loop sequence, the left main landing gear broke off, the left wing tip impacted the ground, and the propeller blades struck the runway surface.
The pilot and passengers sustained no injuries.
Probable Cause
The pilot lost directional control upon landing with the tail-dragger type aircraft which was aggravated by a crosswind component as the tail-dragger type aircraft is more difficult to control during landing which contributed in some degree to the cause of the accident.
