Narrative:On 8 February 1969 the Cessna was returning to Parafield on an unofficial charter flight. The pilot (who was not qualified for IFR flight) decided to return despite the weather being marginal for VFR flight. The Cessna was last seen 10km from the accident site, heading towards an area of low cloud and rain. The aeroplane struck the ground, in a steep nose right wing down attitude, 15km East of Kyancutta, SA. The wreckage was found 2 days later due to bad weather forcing search to remain grounded. It is believed the pilot became disorientated in the low cloud.
The six persons on board that were killed were later named as
Reinhard BAUMEISTER (Pilot) Age 39
Donald Haden DOUGLAS (passenger)
Lewis Lloyd JOHNSON (passenger)
Amelia JOHNSON (passenger)
Walter SORGER (passenger)
James Alexander REID (Known as HORROCKS) (passenger)
Tie probable cause of the accident was that the pilot, who was not qualified for instrument flight, lost control of the aircraft when he proceeded into weather conditions which deprived him of visual reference
NOTES:
1 - Although the registered owner of this aircraft was Lombard Australia Pty Ltd., they were a bank/finance company, who were the "legal owners" as they had funded the aircraft purchase. The actual operator of VH-UPX was Reinhard Baumeister, the pilot - who was killed in the crash (as above)
2 - The registration VH-UPX was later "recycled" and applied to another Cessna 206 (c/no U206-05477) built in 1980, which is, of course, not the same aircraft that crashed in the above incident
