On 1st October 1943 VMF-212 was based in Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, and continued to prepare for being engaged in the Solomons. On this day the squadron flew raining flighs in gunnery, tactics and recognition of ships and aircraft. Lt Preston Peter Wolfe Jr was on tactics exercise when the engine of his FAU-1 Buno 02449 failed. He headed towards Bomber One airfield and lowered landing gear and flaps, but lost altitude and crashed through coconut palms and a large water tower. The aircraft exploded and burned, killing the pilot instantly.
