Narrative:Written off (destroyed) 23-06-2001 when crashed on landing at RAF St. Mawgan, Newquay, Cornwall. The pilot was killed - he died in hospital of burns injuries nine days later - and the three passengers (reportedly the pilots wife and children) sustained serious injuries. According to the following excerpt from the AAIB report into the accident:
"The accident occurred when the pilot of a Cessna 182S lost control of his aircraft during the roll out phase of a landing on Runway 31 at RAF St Mawgan. The aircraft, which had touched down to the left of the runway centre line and maintained a higher than normal speed, veered to the right and then as power was applied ground looped to the left and departed the runway. It became airborne for a short distance before impacting with the ground and catching fire.
After the runway excursion the aircraft was possibly affected by the rotor down-wash from a Sea King helicopter positioned near the runway and air taxiing to take off. The passengers, one of whom was knocked unconscious in the impact, escaped with non-life threatening injuries. The pilot, who also escaped from the aircraft, was severely burned and died of his injuries nine days later.
There was a court case as a result of this accident. Although the Coroner ruled that the pilots death was "accidental", (see link #3), the family of the deceased pilot sued the Ministry of Defence for negligence, and were awarded £5,000.000 (five million pounds sterling) in compensation (see links #4 and #5)
Damage sustained to airframe: Per the AAIB report "Aircraft destroyed". As a result, the registration G-WHDP was cancelled by the CAA on 31-12-2001 as aircraft "destroyed"
