Narrative:A recently qualified pilot was on a flight with a passenger, when the aircraft entered a spin. The plot was unable to recover from the spin, and the aircraft crashed. The plot and passenger were fatally injured.
The aircraft had no apparent defects prior to the accident although it was found to be overweight and the Centre of Gravity (C of G) was beyond the aft limit. It is considered that a combinaton of the aircraft’s weight, its C of G being out of limits, and the plot’s inexperience, all led to the aircraft unintentionally enterng a spin. The aircraft was not certified for spinning.
MAYDAY declared and aircraft spun into field from 5,000 feet. At 12:39 hours the plot made the following distress call: “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY GOLF LIMA SIERRA HAS GONE INTO A SPIN LOSING HEIGHT RAPIDLY”
No further transmissions from the pilot were received. Witnesses described seeing an aircraft at about this time in a flat spin, descending on to a remote field known as Corn Hill, off the A5, between Pattishall and Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, about 17 nautical miles north-west of Cranfield. The aircraft was seen to spin through between five to eight rotations before hitting the ground in a field.
According to a later BBC report on the inquest into the deaths of the two persons on board, their names were stated as being pilot Paul Hanley, 35, from Duston, and passenger Michael Ryan, 34, from Northampton. Both men suffered multiple injuries in the crash. Passers-by first on the scene tried to give first aid, but Mr Hanley died almost immediately at the crash scene, from head and neck injuries, including a massive fracture to his skull. Mr Ryan was taken to the Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry by Air Ambulance with serious injuries, but died later the same day.
Aircraft written off (damaged beyond repair) and the registration G-BDLS was cancelled by the CAA on 21.11.2005
