Late May and early June 1948 also witnessed the Galiilee Squadron of the IDF/AF support Israeli forces operating in the vicinity of Jenin. At least two Austers were used for artlllery spotting and forward air control. Bombing missions were flown against the local police station, though Israeli forces were ultimately forced to withdraw

One Auster was shot down by an Egyptian Hawker Fury piloted by Abu Zayid over Jenin, West Bank, at Coordinates: 3227′42.51″N 3518′4.88″E during these operations. Both crew were killed

*The exact aircraft involved cannot be positively identified due to Multiple re-use of civil registrations to disguise covert operations - 9 aircraft were successively registered VQ-PAI, 2 as VQ-PAJ, and 2 as VQ-PAS. Nine Austers were still in use on 9 September 1948 - 4 operational and 5 in repair.

However, circumstantial evidence points to the Auster being shot down on 7/6/1948 as IAF/DF 0115 (ex-A-32) which was c/no 2024 ex-G-AHHV. This aircraft was delivered to Palestine in July 1946 with Aviron as VQ-PAS, to Sherut Avir in Nov 1947, thence to A-32 with the Galilee Squadron, thence to IAF/AF 0115 upon formation of the IAF/DF
